The NYSSO Downstate Conference features six hours of continuing education:

Photochemical Ocular Damage from Actinic Rays, Presented by Deb Kotob, Dual, Intermediate, 1 hour

In this course, you will learn about photochemical damage (light damage) to the retina and other ocular tissues. You will learn how the combination of oxygen and high energy light is the recipe for oxidative stress produces free radicals that culminate in photochemical damage. And you will learn the role that actinic rays both UV and blue light play in the production of free radicals.

Light Adaptation; Photopic, Mesopic, and Scotopic Vision, Presented by Deb Kotob, Dual, Intermediate, 1 hour

In this course, we explore the effect of photopic, mesopic and scotopic vision on our ability to see in varying light condition. You will learn how our retinal physiology adapts to varying light levels; daylight, twilight and nighttime conditions. And, you will learn how specific wavelength ranges of light set our circadian clock. And you will learn how the parasympathetic nervous system controls of pupil accommodation, lens accommodation, and convergence.


The Art of Making Patient Centered Recommendations, Presented by Samantha Toth, Bus. Mgmt., Intermediate, 2 hours

Patients have more choices than ever before of where to buy their glasses and contact lenses. The motivation behind why patients buy eyewear and contact lenses is important to understand in order to recommend the best vision solutions. This course teaches the art of making patient centered recommendations and how to overcome common purchasing hesitation and explores all the necessary, critical strategies to communicate why you, versus an online retailer.


Increase Profit Seeing the Same Number of Patients, Presented by Doug Martin, Bus. Mgmt, Basic, 1 hour

Learn how to identify and understand patient lifestyle needs and budget constraints that generate long-term patient satisfaction. In addition to proven communication strategies, this course also provides training on the correlation between space and staffing plans.


An Open Forum-- Live Demonstration on State-of-the-Art Lens Finishing Equipment, Presented by Santinelli, OD, Basic, 1 Hour
