The Role & Responsibilities of a NYSSO
Regional Director

Goal
To support NYSSO’s statewide outreach and operations by ensuring that the membership in each of NYSSO seven Regions is being represented.  Each Region shall be represented on the Board of Directors by three Regional Directors, who will be elected by members within a Region.

Objectives

  • Ensure that the membership in each region is being heard and their ideas, opinions and suggestions are presented to NYSSO Leadership.
  • Recruit and retain NYSSO membership within the Region.
  • Recommend and review NYSSO activities and direction to improve the Society and better represent the needs of the membership.
  • Advise NYSSO Leadership of the challenges that might arise in each Region and of possible solutions.

Regional Director Duties & Responsibilities
Regional Directors are the eyes and ears of the NYSSO in the field. They represent “grassroots” leadership for our association. They bring ideas, suggestions and awareness of professional problems, as well as opportunities, to the Society’s leadership for review and action.

A Regional Director will:

  • Attend and participate in two Board of Directors Meetings a year (Fall Meeting in Albany & Spring Meeting at Turning Stone). Board Members are provided with hotel accommodations and reimbursement for travel.
  • Work collaboratively with two fellow Regional Directors in organizing the planning and implementating of NYSSO activity within their Region and finding support for the activity.
  • Serve on, at least one NYSSO Committee.  Committees mainly conduct business via conference calls.
  • Communicate with Opticians in the Region in order to establish good rapport between these professionals and the Society.  Identify and help recruit new members for the Society.
  • Communicate with the NYSSO Leadership & Staff periodically to compare ideas, share problems and opportunities.  Regional Director conference calls will also be conducted throughout the year.
  • Gather information that is beneficial to the Society and profession-at-large.

Summary
NYSSO Regional Directors have a great responsibility and they play an integral part of the Society’s growth and survival.  NYSSO Officers and Staff are willing and ready to assist you in your important role.  Never hesitate to contact leadership when you need help.
